ARN Recycling and NPSP have joined forces to develop a new composite made from materials from recycled cars and a bio-based resin. The material is manufactured in an environmentally-friendly process, is very strong and can be cast and printed onto, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, for example street name signs and street furniture. The material is to be marketed under the brand name BlueRoots.
The new composite is made up of a mixture of a binding agent and a filler. The binding agent is a bio-based resin with which NPSP has years of experience, based on use in its own products. The fillers, originating from recycled cars, are produced by ARN Recycling in the new PST (Post Shredder Technology) facility in Tiel. In the past, these materials were either incinerated or dumped, but thanks to the PST facility and use in this new composite material, such disposal is no longer necessary.
Sustainability on every street corner
One of the first applications for the new composite material is in street name signs. The Netherlands has some 250,000 streets, each with at least 2 street name signs, in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and designs, often produced in aluminium. BlueRoots offers a sustainable alternative: the material is cast to shape and can be printed on, making it ideal for this purpose. Signs can be produced with a historical look as well as signs that meet the requirements of the most contemporary designs. For the lettering on the signs themselves old-fashioned letters can be used, but it will also be possible to use modern films with good reflective characteristics.
Just as good as aluminium
To prove that the composite signs are just as good as conventional aluminium street name signs, a trial series is to be produced, which will then be certified according to the Dutch standards for street name signs. This initial trial production is a major step forwards for this project, marking the transition from concept phase to production.
Application of this composite will help save the environment, because it implies the use of materials that in the past could not be recycled. Compared to aluminium, which is often employed as a carrying material for street name signs, BlueRoots composite material would mean a significant reduction in overall environmental burden. The eventual price of the material will not be higher than that for conventional street name signs. As a consequence, the composite represents a sustainable and economically-attractive alternative for conventional street name signs.
