Driving force behind car recycling

ARN has been the driving force behind car recycling in the Netherlands for over 25 years. We facilitate, we report, and we are at the heart of a network of importers, car-dismantling companies, shredding companies and recycling companies. Together with approximately 300 partners, we organise the collection and high-value recycling of cars and car batteries.

If you want to dispose of an end-of-life vehicle, you can drop it off at one of many collection points, or authorised treatment facilities as they are also known. ARN takes care of all the necessary arrangements, so that affiliated car-dismantling companies can focus on what they do best and comply with all the applicable regulations. Together with our partners, we are proud that we can now recycle over 98 per cent of an end-of-life vehicle, by weight.

ARN arranges things such as transport to specialised recycling companies, translates new environmental regulations into practice and advises companies accordingly. To facilitate an as level a playing field as possible, we think along critically and constructively with governmental bodies when they develop regulations.

Car recycling focused on tomorrow

The automotive world has moved up a gear or two. Electric vehicles are quickly becoming the norm, with new materials finding their way into them. But the recycling industry is responding to these changes, with ARN specialists looking ahead to the future and asking the right questions. What is the best way to collect and recycle electric cars and batteries, for example? And how can advanced plastics be recycled? To ensure that tomorrow’s car recycling continues to be as complete as possible, ARN relies on research and practical innovation. The ultimate goal is to maximise our contribution to a circular economy.

Special attention for batteries

Due to the increasing number of electric vehicles on our roads, at ARN we are paying particular attention to the collection and processing of drive batteries. How can we reuse as much of them as possible? We collaborate with several partners who are giving disposed-of drive batteries a new lease of life, while other lithium-ion batteries are recycled in specialised factories. In conjunction with the Innovam training institute, ARN has developed a practical training course for the people who will be working with high-voltage batteries.

Founders, and still the driving force

The three organisations that stood at the cradle of ARN back in 1995 are still the driving forces behind us today. Collectively, in Stichting Auto Recycling Holding, these organisations, namely, BOVAG, FOCWA, RAI Vereniging (association) and Stiba, represent the automotive industry in the Netherlands.
