83.7%
A car that has reached the end of its life is dismantled and processed in the Netherlands through a responsible and high-quality car recycling chain. The car dismantling company is the first link in the car recycling chain. Of all end-of-life vehicles in the Netherlands, 83.7% is sent to a car dismantling company affiliated to the ARN.
The residual materials from all Dutch end-of-life vehicles are sent to ARN Recycling’s Post-Shredder Technology plant in Tiel. This enables ARN to oversee the complete car recycling chain.
Sustainable car dismantling
From fluid drainage installations to special boxes for transporting batteries: thanks to the recycling fee we can organise these issues together. ARN facilitates this process and provides practical solutions. ARN has had drainage installations developed for its affiliated car dismantling companies. This means no fluids from old cars, such as oil or brake fluid, are lost. ARN bears the costs for the service and maintenance of the drainage installations.
Other innovations can be expected in the future, such as for dismantling electric cars. For this purpose, ARN organises training to enable safe dismantling of drive batteries from electric cars.
Sustainable Development Goals
For the second year, ARN has submitted itself to the yardstick of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the motto ‘lean and green’ in mind. The colored SDGs shown opposite apply specifically to the content of this page.
Reliable registration
In order to maintain a good overview, the waste materials removed from old cars are registered. ARN ensures the applicable ICT system works smoothly. Thereby making it clear which cars have been dismantled and where LPG tanks, tyres and fluids go. ARN enters collective agreements with transporters for the transport between chain partners. And organises the flow of materials between ADBs and processors and between the PST plant and processors.
The government contributes
Government registration, during the period cars are in use, is well organised in the Netherlands. We have a closed car registration system that is highly regarded across Europe. Basically, it is a closed system that is based on holdership with an holdership obligation, namely, the person in possession of the car’s documents pays the tax. If the car changes hands or enters a new phase of life, then the RDW is able to monitor the car in the closed system. Thanks in part to the closed car registration system, the lion’s share of end-of-life cars in the Netherlands are recycled by one of ARN’s chain partners in a responsible and high-quality manner.
