The proportion of mild steel in passenger cars will decline sharply in the years ahead. Back in 2010, the material accounted for 55% of the total weight of bodywork and panelling parts, but according to the American Centre for Automotive Research (CAR) this will drop to a mere 5% by 2040. These will be the most common materials for bodywork and panelling parts twenty years into the future:
