The European Commission has presented a proposal for new regulations on end-of-life vehicles. The aim of this initiative is to eliminate hazardous substances in new cars and ensure that most parts and materials from end-of-life cars are reused or recycled.
ARN welcomes the proposal. It will lead to improved collection, treatment and recycling of end-of-life vehicles in Europe. It is a solid document that adds a lot of ambition on top of the current directive. However, it is a big step to get all parties to comply with it. This will not be easy not only in the Netherlands, but in other countries as well. For this reason, ARN calls for attention to proportionality. It calls for consideration of the effort required in relation to the effect of the measures. This will result in a balanced package of rules that can be supported, practicable and verifiable.
