Recycling fee for cars

The recycling fee is payable on all cars that are registered in the Netherlands. In addition to new cars, this now includes all imported cars that are registered in the Netherlands for the first time.

Car-recycling results

When an end-of-life vehicle is taken to a car-dismantling company, no less than 98.7 per cent, by weight, will be reused, recycled or channelled to another useful application.

In 2021, over 80 importers participated in the collection and recycling scheme of the ARN Management Plan.

An end-of-life vehicle goes through quite a process: being dropped off, dismantled, shredded and the materials are then separated into potential new usage streams

What happens to the batteries?

The increasing number of electric cars on our roads translates to more and more of their batteries being disposed of. ARN collects both lithium-ion starter batteries and drive batteries.

The role of ARN

Together with the affiliated companies in the recycling chain, ARN ensures that at least 95 per cent of an end-of-life vehicle, by weight, is gainfully reused. We help importers by assuming their producer responsibilities.

Sustainability Report

In 2021, together with our partners, ARN managed to gainfully reuse 98.7 per cent of end-of-life vehicles, by weight. For batteries too, the attained recycling level of over 70 per cent was comfortably above the legal norm.
